Sinusitis and Ozone Therapy in Sandy, Utah
What Is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is inflammation and swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. The sinuses are hollow air-filled spaces located in the skull between the eyes, behind the cheeks, and in the forehead. Under normal conditions, the sinuses produce mucus that helps keep the nasal passages moist and protects against allergens, dust, and environmental pollutants.
When sinus drainage becomes blocked, mucus builds up and pressure increases. Healthy sinuses should remain filled with air and drain properly.
Symptoms of Sinusitis
Common symptoms of sinusitis include:
- Thick yellow or green nasal discharge or postnasal drip
- Nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose
- Pressure or pain around the eyes, nose, cheeks, or forehead
- Reduced or lost sense of smell
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Bad breath
- Dental or upper jaw pain
Causes of Sinusitis
Sinusitis may develop due to several underlying factors, including:
- Viral infections such as the common cold
- Allergic rhinitis or environmental allergies
- Nasal polyps
- Deviated septum
- Chronic inflammatory or immune system conditions (such as cystic fibrosis or immune deficiency disorders)
- Exposure to cigarette smoke or irritants
Sinusitis Treatment Options
Treatment for sinusitis often depends on the cause and severity of symptoms. Common approaches include:
- Ozone nasal insufflation therapy
- Saline nasal sprays (short-term use only)
- Nasal corticosteroids (typically not recommended for long-term use without supervision)
- Decongestants (short-term use only)
- Allergy medications
- Antibiotics (only effective for bacterial infections)
- Warm compress therapy
- Increased hydration
Ozone Therapy for Sinusitis
Ozone therapy, including nasal insufflation, is used in some clinical settings as a supportive approach for sinus inflammation and infection-related symptoms.
Research studies have evaluated ozone therapy in patients with chronic sinusitis. In one study of 102 patients with chronic frontal sinusitis, patients received 5–7 ozone therapy sessions alongside a control group receiving conventional treatment. The ozone therapy group showed faster improvement, with recovery occurring approximately 4.3 days earlier on average.
In another study involving 39 patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis, patients receiving ozone therapy also demonstrated faster recovery compared to the control group, with improvement occurring 2–3 days earlier.
How Ozone Therapy May Support Sinus Health
Studies suggest that ozone therapy may:
- Help reduce viral, bacterial, and fungal activity, including resistant strains
- Support immune system activity
- Increase antioxidant activity in the body
- Support cellular oxygen utilization and energy production
- Support white blood cell activity
- Help reduce fever and inflammatory response
Many patients report noticeable relief from symptoms such as congestion, sinus pressure, and breathing difficulty following ozone nasal therapy.
